With deep roots in agriculture and a passion for his craft, Lawson Fielder embodies the spirit of Riceland's farmer-owned cooperative. For over 15 years, Lawson has been a dedicated member of the co-op, farming rice, and soybeans on his family's operation, Fielder 3 Farms.

A Legacy of Farming

Farming runs deep in Lawson's family. He recalls growing up surrounded by the land, learning the ropes from his father and grandfather. "My great-grandfather was one of the first to start growing rice in this area after moving from California," Lawson shares. This legacy motivates him every day as he carries on the family tradition.

While Lawson admits he doesn't often consider the broader impact of his work—"I'm just thinking about the next thing that needs to get done"—he recognizes the importance of feeding families locally and globally. He appreciates the significant role Riceland plays in this mission, allowing farmers to connect directly with consumers.

The Thrill of Diversity

When asked about his favorite crop, Lawson passionately describes rice as his top choice. "I just like it. You see more results out of it than you do with soybeans," he explains. The variability of farming keeps Lawson engaged and challenged, as no two days are ever the same. "It's something different every day. You never know what a new day will bring, and I love that," he adds.

One challenge Lawson highlights is the common misconception that farming is merely "driving a tractor." "There's a lot more than just that," he says. Farming involves extensive planning, management, and financial acumen, likening it to a gamble with high stakes. "It's a lot of money, planning, and potential loss," he explains.

The Value of Cooperatives

As a Riceland member, Lawson values the cooperative's support and reliability. "They've always taken care of us and treated us well," he says. The cooperative and its board of directors work hard to ensure that farmers like Lawson have their voices heard and that decisions reflect the needs of those on the ground.

Being part of a cooperative means being part of a community. "If one of us ever needs help, we go over to each other's farms," Fielder explains. This collaborative spirit is vital, especially during challenging times when shared expertise and assistance can make all the difference.

From fostering community connections to advocating for farmers' interests, cooperatives play a crucial role in the success and sustainability of agricultural operations. As Lawson continues to work the land, he knows that being part of a cooperative is not just about individual farming success—it's about contributing to a larger mission of supporting farmers and nourishing communities.

Future of Farming

Looking ahead, Lawson sees promise in the younger generation taking over farming operations. He observes that many of his peers are stepping up to manage family farms as their fathers age, bringing new energy and ideas into the industry. He believes this trend is essential for the sustainability of agriculture in the area.

Lawson offers straightforward advice for those considering a career in farming: "Just do it. You'll figure it out as you go." His journey reflects that sentiment; he knows dedication and hard work lead to success in this field.

Lawson Fielder's journey exemplifies the resilience and commitment of Riceland farmers. His story reflects a deep respect for the land, a dedication to quality agriculture, and a commitment to the community that defines the Riceland cooperative. As we continue to support our farmer members, we celebrate Lawson and his contribution to feeding families.
